Even though it's small, don't just try to remove the skin tag yourself, because it can cause new problems. Better, first identify the cause of skin tags, and safe ways to eliminate them.

What Causes Skin Tags?

Skin tag sizes vary, ranging from a few millimeters to about 5 centimeters. Skin tags are commonly found around the armpits, chest, calves, groin, neck, eyelids, or around the buttocks. Skin tags are formed from blood vessels and collagen in the outer layer of the skin. However, until now the exact cause of skin tags is still unclear. Most likely this condition occurs because of friction on the surface of the skin, both between the skin with clothing, jewelry, or other objects. Skin tags can occur in men and women, especially those who are overweight and diabetics. Skin tags can also appear as a side effect of increasing pregnancy hormones in pregnant women.

How to get rid of skin tags

It is not recommended to try to remove the skin tag yourself at home, by pulling it using a rope or by applying chemicals for peeling. Because, these methods can cause pain such as burning, bleeding, to infection. It is best to consult a doctor to remove skin tags. There are several ways doctors can do to remove skin tags, such as:
  • Small surgery

  • This procedure is done by cutting the skin tag with sterile scissors, or cutting it using a scalpel.
  • Electrical surgery

  • In this procedure, the skin tag will be heated with electricity.
  • Cryotherapy

  • In the cryotherapy procedure, the skin tag will be frozen with liquid nitrogen, making it easier to remove the skin tag.
  • Ligation

  • Skin tags are removed by binding and cutting the flow of blood vessels in it using surgical threads.
Doctors generally do not need to anesthetize patients if skin tags are small and few. Local anesthesia is only done on large skin tags with large amounts. One of the risks of handling skin tags is mild bleeding. However, patients generally do not require a long recovery time so they can immediately move on as usual. In addition to some of the above treatments, many people choose to eliminate skin tags with natural treatments using apple vinegar, lemon juice, or with tea tree oil. But, until now there has been no scientific study that can prove the effectiveness of this natural treatment. The existence of skin tags that do not interfere, actually do not need special handling. However, consult a doctor if the skin tag starts to interfere or if it shows a change in color, shape, size or amount.
